Deepika Kumari was born in Ratu Chati village of Jharkhand. Her family only earned Rs. 700 a month which is why she took up archery at Kharsawan training centre as it provided free housing and food. She soon started participating in sub-junior tournaments with makeshift bamboo bows, but still won, earning her the prize money of Rs. 500. Deepika Kumari had to gradually adjust to the recurve bows and arrows from her traditional bamboo arrows.
After winning several national junior tournaments, she started participating in international tournaments. Deepika has won 23 world cups, 6 Asian Championships, 2 world championships, 1 Asians Games and 2 commonwealth Games. Her story of vigour, hardwork and dedication makes her one of India’s pioneers and an inspiration to all women.
